Nationally Certified Members
These members are professional sign language interpreters who have successfully passed both the written and performance exams through RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc.) or an RID-recognized program.
To learn more about the different types of certifications, visit the Generalist Certificates on the RID website.
Pre-Certified Associate Members
These members are on the path to becoming certified interpreters. They have completed some formal training and passed certain assessments. This category includes:
Hearing Interpreters who have passed the RID NIC written exam and are officially recognized as “Candidates for Certification.”
Deaf Interpreters who have passed the RID CDI or QA written test, but haven’t yet completed the performance exam.
While not fully certified yet, these members are actively progressing through the certification process.
Organizational Members
These members are agencies or organizations that choose to be listed in the FRID directory. While this is a non-voting category, we appreciate their support of the interpreting profession!
Supporting Members
Often students or community members who are passionate about the Deaf community and interpreting field, Supporting Members do not need to hold any credentials. This is also a non-voting category and a great way to stay connected and involved.

Certification & Ethics Requirement
All Certified and Pre-Certified Associate Members must maintain active membership with both FRID and RID. This ensures they follow the RID-NAD Code of Professional Conduct and are held accountable through RID’s Ethical Practices System (EPS).
